How can I tell if an element in a compound is sp, sp2, or sp3?

I have been given an compound and have to determine if the Carbon and oxygens are sp, sp2, or sp3.

THANKS!

How can I tell if an element in a compound is sp, sp2, or sp3?
look at your drawing...

there are electrons on each of these atoms.

an sp hybridization occurs on a Carbon atom in CO2

sp2 on CO3

sp3 on CH4
Reply:Did they give you a formula, or a name of the compound?
Reply:If it is a single bond it is sp3. If it is a double bond it is sp2. If it is a triple bond it is sp. I hope this helps
